Nestled in the vibrant Mercado dos Lavradores, A Confeitaria is not just a café; it’s an experience that beckons locals and travelers alike to indulge in the rich tapestry of Madeiran flavors. This charming establishment is located at R. Hospital Velho 4, 9060-129 Funchal, Portugal, and can be reached at +351 291 621 325. With its delightful display of pastries, artisanal breads, and local desserts, this café effortlessly captures the essence of Funchal’s culinary scene.

The ambiance of A Confeitaria is one of warmth and creativity, with friendly staff who have a great rapport with one another, adding to the welcoming atmosphere. The café’s cozy setting makes it perfect for a casual afternoon coffee break or a sweet escape from the bustling market outside. You can watch as the baristas skillfully craft each drink while the tempting aromas of fresh pastries waft through the air, enticing you to indulge.

Start your culinary journey with the much-lauded pão de deus (bread of God), a local favorite that is a must-try according to many Madeirans. With its pillowy texture and sweet, coconut-infused crust, this delightful treat is a slice of heaven. For those who can enjoy dairy and eggs, the selection of Pastel de Nata—especially when served warm—will undoubtedly leave you craving more. As one customer, JALILA HARRATI, aptly noted, A Confeitaria's version is the best in Funchal, perfectly crisp on the outside and creamy on the inside.

And let’s not forget the esthetic pleasures—Sabine Sieben likens marveling at their exquisite array of cakes and pastries to an art exhibition. A generous slice of cheesecake adorned with fresh berries has become a signature offering, promising not only a taste of indulgence but also a visual feast. For coffee lovers, be sure to sip on their renowned iced coffee, praised by Aaron Robertson as the best on the island, making it an unforgettable treat.

While A Confeitaria dazzles with its tempting offerings, it is worth noting that they currently lack vegan dessert options. However, if you are among those who enjoy dairy and eggs, you will find yourself enveloped in a delightful array of sweets that showcase the rich culinary tradition of the region. The café thrives on community and engagement, making it a social hub where laughter and casual banter fill the air.

Whether you're a local or just passing through, A Confeitaria promises a taste of Madeira that transcends the ordinary. Stop by for a coffee, share a laugh with the staff, and let the delicious flavors transport you to a little slice of paradise in Funchal's heart.

This coffee shop is worth the visit with beautiful pastries, bread and local desserts. However, there is not a single vegan dessert option amongst the food display . My husband ate here twice and he really enjoyed everything. If you eat dairy and eggs, you should come here.

I am going to miss this place terribly. The Brasileiro are amazing—the iced coffee is the best in Madeira. The staff is funny, often going back and forth with one another. I've been here five times and will truly miss this until next time. Edit: Nevermind. I got pickpocketed while enjoying my last trip. Watch out. It's a busy area so stay clear.

This is the famous must try pão de deus(bread of god) as recommended by many Madeirans.

Beautiful place, great for an afternoon coffee and a sneaky piece of cake. Had a large piece of cheesecake with berries on top, that was to die for! Just marveling at their pastries and cakes is an experience of its own. Definitely recommend going there in the afternoon, when the Mercado is more or less empty.

I went on a tasting experience in search of the best Portuguese pastries in Funchal, and I wasn’t disappointed. I had the best Pastel de Nata, served slightly warm. It was perfect. I also bought a few pastries to try and they were all very good.

The best place to have breakfast in Funchal. Guitar music, great atmosphere, delicious fresh food, lovely coffee and attentive service. Great value for money too. Recommend!

The café is nicely placed inside the mercado. We ordered some coffees, a vanila latte and some dezerts. The dezerts were wonderfull and the coffees were great. Nothing to add just a very nice coffee shop.
